Secure a rental car for your free and independent (FIT) clients in the South Island of New Zealand with Touchdown Car Rentals.
Touchdown Car Rentals provide a boutique collection of luxury cars including convertible Mustangs, Ford E Mach, late model Subarus, Prados and Toyotas. In addition, Toyota Hiace and Mercedes Vito vans are in the fleet. With depots in both Christchurch and Queenstown, Touchdown Car Rentals are your ideal partner for self-drive clients to explore the South Island. Qualmark endorsed.
· The cars are very modern: All models are 2024 and newer, except
o Mercedes Vito Tourer (November 2022)
o Ford Mustang Convertable V8 5.0 litre (November 2022)
· The fleet size does vary a little by season but generally the winter fleet size is about 85 and in summer about 70 cars.
· 50% of the fleet are hybrid vehicles.
· There are two convertible Ford Mustang Convertibles in the fleet along with Ford Mustang Mach-E.
· For winter hires, for ski customers, the vehicles all come with roof racks and chains at no extra cost.

FAQ’s
One Way Hires: Christchurch/Queenstown or Queenstown/Christchurch. For hires of fewer than 10 days there is a fee of $500. If the customer is to pay this, they can pay on collection. If the agent is paying, we invoice at the completion of rental.
Additional Drivers: You can have as many drivers as required, at no additional cost, PROVIDED they have a full drivers licence for a car in the country of origin and are over 21 years of age.
· Ages: Minimum age is 21 years. No maximum age limit, provided the holder has a full licence with no restrictions.
· Must have a full car licence with no restrictions – not learners, restricted or probationary.
Credit Cards: Customers must provide a credit card issued in their name. We do not accept money or travel cards, and this includes Wise card. We accept all credit cards including Amex. For Visa & Mastercard a 2% surcharge applies and for Amex a 4% surcharge applies.
Cancellation Policy: No fee if cancelled within 7 days of pick up. Within 7 days, 1 days rental is the cancellation fee, and within 24 hours the full rental amount.
Christchurch Depot: Located at Commodore Hotel, only 1.4 km from Christchurch International Airport. Free 24-hour hotel shuttle available for clients – note this is branded “Commodore Hotel”. *Provided paperwork is complete, cars can be picked up/dropped off out of hours from the Commodore Hotel reception desk 24/7.
Alternative Christchurch pickup/drop-off location: Hotel Montreal- the Google address of the hotel is 351 Montreal Street. There is pick up/drop off parking available at this location however in our large, free carpark is accessed via “23 Kilmore Street”. Hours: 8am to 6pm.
Queenstown Depot: Dedicated depot with free shuttle service to and from Queenstown Airport (this is branded Touchdown Car Rentals). Only 1.1 km from the airport. Address: 12 McBride Street. Alternative Queenstown pick up/drop of is Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel ONLY for guests staying at Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel. Address: 21 Robins Road, Queenstown 9300. Hours: 8am to 6pm.
The shuttles at Christchurch and Queenstown are both ‘on demand’. Once the client has collected bags and passed through customs/border control then phone for pick up service. Drop off at end of rental also provided, so clients should allow time to drop off the car and then be transferred to the airport.
Repositioning Cars to other locations: Strictly on request (and a fee) we will relocate cars to popular locations around the South Island to meet your clients. For example, relocation to Greymouth to meet clients from Tranz Alpine train, or to Picton to meet clients from the inter-islander ferry. Indicative fees:
· Greymouth (to meet the Tranz Alpine) approx. $500
· Picton- Blenheim-Nelson approx. $750
· Kaikoura approx. $400
· Mount Cook approx. $950
· Dunedin approx. $850
· Indicative pricing as at December 2025. Subject to change.
Breakdowns/Accidents: In the event of a breakdown or accident, customer should call the nearest Touchdown office immediately and we will direct the necessary services as required. Ph 0800 736 849. Note in the event of an accident involving personal injury the number is 111 for ambulance, fire and police.
Ferry to North Island: Provided the cars are returned to the South Island, travel to the North Island is possible. However, this is all at the customers risk – we do not have support or replacement vehicles in the North Island in the instance of a breakdown or accident. The customer would be fully liable for arranging vehicle return to the South Island.
Restricted Roads: Any unformed road or any track or thoroughfare including gravel roads that is not officially designated a road, including any beach. Specific restricted road examples: Skippers Canyon (Queenstown), Ball Hut Road (Mount Cook), Macetown Road (Arrowtown), Nevis Road (near Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northlands), North of Colville Township (Coromandel), Tapu-Coroglen Road (Coromandel).
